The Dark Knight's main asset is it's ability to deal heavy damage. The downside of this however is that it has a low defence. This makes the Dark Knight somewhat crippled for soloing as it can get damaged quite easily and has no healing magic. It does however have some Black Magic, which add to its array of ways to damange opponents.

They also have a duration in which they will work and a recharge time, which you have to wait before you can use it again

Like most previous Final Fantasies, magic will consume MP, and also like previous FF's, most magic has an element assigned to it
However, magic in FFXI also have a 'Skill' which is the type of action it will perform, whether it be Elemental, Healing or Enhancing.
